What Would You Do?

My American Idol comments are at the bottom, so for those of you (Mrs. Mogul) who haven't watched yet, you can read up to there!

----------------
Anyone see Oprah yesterday? I don't watch her much, but whenever I do it gets me fired up. I only saw one segment, but it featured a woman who had killed her live-in boyfriend when she found out he was molesting her daughter. The daughter had told her before that he had touched her, but when the mom confronted him, he denied it and convinced her that the daughter was too young to know what was happening. The mother didn't believe her until she walked in on them, naked. She grabbed her daughter, ran out of the house, hid the daughter, and then went back in for an explanation from the boyfriend. On her way in, she grabbed a gun for protection because he had been violent before.

She then went into the bedroom where she confronted him. She says he laughed at her, told her no one would believe her, and then came at her. She shot him 4 times and killed him. She was found not guilty of murder by a jury.

So here is the question: what would you do? Would you have believed your daughter the first time, or could you be convinced that she is too young to understand? Once you got out of the house, would you have gone back in to confront the abuser? Would you have just gone and got the gun right away and shot him without discussion? Would you, if you were on the jury, found her guilty of murder or do you think she was justified?

Its hard to even put myself in that position because Hub is such an amazing person; I never even think about something like that potentially happening. But if I am imagining for a moment...Princess is, say, 4 years old and tells me that daddy has done this or that...what would I do?

I think I would take Princess and leave. No explanation is necessary nor would I want to hear one. Then I would call the police and have him arrested.

That's what I *think* I would do. But chances are good that I'd kill him right on the spot.

On a lighter note, no big surprises with Idol. We knew it was either Baby V or Anthony to go, and they were in the bottom 2. Anthony went, and Vonzell will most likely go next week.

Carrie looked terrified, I have to say. Based on the judges' comments about her second performance, I think she was afraid she was next to go.

And I thought it was interesting to see their auditions again. It showed how far Vonzell has come. It showed that Carrie was awesome right from the beginning, but needed to improve her stage presence then and hasn't done it yet. I thought Anthony was better in his audition than he has been the rest of the season. And Bo sounded a little off, but you could see his star potential from the start.

the dude definitely deserved the bullet. He would have ended up ruining that little girl's life and probably many other kid's lives.

I don't know about this. I have a hard time that she didn't get convicted even though I think the guy was scum he did not deserve to die and she DID murder him. There were other solutions that she did not attempt to carry out. Her first reaction was to kill him, and that is wrong.

It is hard to say what you would do in the same situation, but I think that I would just get out of there and call the authorities or get as far away as possible. I am not one for people taking the law into their own hands.

Sorry Molly, but I have to disagree with you there. He deserved to die. How can an adult look at a young child and find anything sexual there. I have never understood that. And I'm all for the way she handled it too. If she had just let the police handle it, this guy would have been on the streets again at some point, possibly to do this to someone else. Now, It's guaranteed that he will never molest another child again.

About the AI audition tapes....
I thought Vonzell gave her best performance at the audition. She hasn't impressed me much since. Carrie is a great singer, hopefully they'll teach her not to be so robotic at some point. Bo was funny looking without the facial hair... and I can see why they glossed over his audition in the beginning- not great but good enough to get him there...
I've hated Anthony since day one. I really think the only reason he ever made the show was he had such a great back story... too bad he never could live up to the potential the story gave him.

As long as my response here is, I should have just answered all this as my own blog entry... lol

Thanks for the link by the way!

honestly I dont knoe for sure how i would handle it. but i'm pretty sure that if i believed without a doubt--let alone caught someone in the act --I would inflict some harm to that person

I'd have tied him naked to a tree, poured milk all over him, and turned loose the bucket calves. He wouldn't hurt another little girl, that's for sure.

I think ultimately we have a legal systen for a reason and that whatever the crime, everyone deserves a fair trial and to be sentenced by a judge/jury and not by individuals taking the law into their own hands. if everyone did, we'd have anarchy and i am sorry guppyman, but however much he deserved to die (i happen to be against the death penalty, but then that's not the point), it was still not her call to make. She is, in my opinion, guilty of murder, although I am sure her punishment should be reflective of her crime and hence take into consideration why she acted the way she did.

I would have believed her and gotten her out the first time. I don't trust anyone with my daughters. Even if she was making it up, that would mean she was having some serious issues about the boyfriend, and the daughter must be her mother's priority.
As for killing him, I don't know. I would want to, no doubt. I've always said if someone touched one of my daughters and took away their inocence, I would take 'em out. But Oprah once did a show on parents who went to prison for doing that. That would devastate a daughter even further.

Here's the thing - he had been "violent" before - leading me to believe that this was an abusive relationship to begin with (and explains how he put her off the first time). Having that reality smacked in her face and his coming after her, I think it was totally justified. Maybe manslaughter instead of murder.

If it were my husband/boyfriend, I would have removed myself and my child when she first told; if he's innocent, he can prove it to me later.

When it comes to something like sexual abuse of a child, my approach is that the adult is guilty until proven otherwise, which is to say you MUST give the child the benefit of the doubt and believe them. I am not saying you go out and shoot the one he/she is accusing, but you do take it seriously and act accordingly. How can you not?

Here's the problem I've got -- she was afraid enough to take a gun with her for protection because he'd been violent before, but not afraid enough of what he MIGHT do to believe her own kid?

Firstly love...love...love the new look!!! yay..I can't wait for real now! Second, I would've killed the bastard. Like you my husband would NEVER even THINK about doing something like that..but damn. What a hard thing to process. I would've believed her the first time around. Kids that age don't know how to lie like that. They just don't have the vocabulary or "shouldn't" know the situations. If it ever came up...she obviously got it from somewhere. Don't even get me started on child abuse...another very passionate subject for me. Great post...thanks ;0)

Let's see...I can say without hesistation that if anyone touches my daughter, they die. Fact of life. I am not worried about my police officer husband but sexual predators beware...you are dead where you stand. Can you tell I have thought of this before?

As for Idol, I have liked Carrie from the auditions. I agree with all you say but I really like Vonzell, I think she has a beautiful voice, but for some reason doesn't have the fan base. Oh well!

I love your new look! It's absolutely awesome!

I would have taken my kid and gotten the hell out the first time.

Did you see how emotional Carrie was when Anthony sang his goodbye song? I think those two must have been pretty tight.

I would have taken her and left the first time, but I would have let the legal system handle it. I think she DID murder him, and that was wrong. Justice is not ours to decide.
