I'm Not Fonda Jane (plus a tiny little AI rant)

Let me get this out of my system: Okay, America, what were you thinking exactly? Scott was not even in the bottom three. Who is voting for this guy? Don't you know what he did? How can you vote for someone like that? Let's get it right next week, shall we?

Now onto my real post for the day.

Anyone else have strong feelings about Jane Fonda? I never did before. I was really too young to understand the Vietnam thing, so while it obviously bothered me that she'd hang out on an enemy anti-aircraft gun with the North Vietnamese and have a good laugh about it, I didn't understand the implications deeply enough to hate her for it. I loved the movie 9 to 5, and that was really my only view of her.

However. I have seen her all over the news lately promoting her book. And she is getting on my nerves. For one thing, she is quite unapologetic about her Vietnam involvement. And for all the people to whom she has caused pain, she should be at least a little sorry, even if just the perception of what she did hurt people.

But for me, I am mostly annoyed at her for calling herself a feminist over and over and over. She claims to be a feminist as she tells stories about her first marriage. How she would go out and pick up women to participate in threesomes with her and her husband. This was something she didn't want to do, and disliked it so much that she had to get drunk to do it. But she did it repeatedly in order to keep her man happy.

She also, back in the 80's while peddling her exercise videos and making millions from them, was bulemic. So here she was, preaching to woman that they should look like her, yet the whole time she was bingeing and purging to help create an unrealistic ideal for women.

Then she married Ted Turner. During their marriage she became a Christian but was afraid to tell him because she was afraid he would talk her out of it. She said he was a great debater who was often known to talk her out of doing the things she wanted to do (or into things she didn't want to do). So she hid this from him and was a closet Christian during the marriage.

I don't get it. Aren't these things the antithesis of feminism? Doing what a man says even though you don't want to for fear of losing him? Selling an unrealistic body image when you can't even reach it properly and healthily (I know that's not a word, but I am on a rant here, work with me) yourself? Keeping information as important as your faith from your husband for fear that he will talk you out of your core belief system?

Its fine with me if you want to be that kind of woman (but I don't want to hang with you). Just please, don't go on television saying that being that kind of woman equates to being a strong woman. It doesn't.

I don't know WHO votes for Scott, quite bizarre. Too bad for Constantine, I did not think he did well THIS week but the previous few he was bringing down the house.

I didn't know all of that stuff about Fonda. I used to not care but now I think I don't like her so much as she sounds like she was always afraid to be herself, which is a plight for which no one should be lauded.

I don't get the whole American Idol thing, either. And why IS that Scott guy still there? Who IS voting for him? Unsolved mysteries, for sure.

And you are right on about Jane Fonda. As a woman I'm embarrassed by her. I'm right there with ya on that one.

I chime in my agreement on JF as well...I've never been a big fan of hers. She's a rabble rouser.

Being a non-AI person, you totally threw me with the Scott opener. Fortunately, I'm a smart chick and I caught on. I've never been a big JF fan either, but I was much more disgusted by the guy who hocked a loogie in her face last week and then went on TV to brag about it. That's just some low-level, gutter-dwelling, knuckle-scraping-when-you-walk nasty behavior...

I'm totally convinced that A.I. is fixed!!!
As for Ms.Fonda- I used to sweat along to her exercise videos as a young teen. I was so pissed when I found out that she had an eating disorder & fake boobs. I've never respected her since.

Hey! So I read the first paragraph! I hate SCOTT! He is a wife beater!!! DO you think people didnt vote for Constantine because he already has a record deal? Is this allowed in the contract? I can;t wait to see it fri! Molly has done the "DONt REad this AI POST for me too" and I think it is funny!

I never liked her but she always seemed to play characters I could like in movies...Barbarella, On Gold Pond..

Scott should have been gone weeks ago.

Yep, I think Scott will be SO outta there next week!

I have no real opinion on Jane Fonda, since she always seemed to be so full of herself anyway. She is a decent actress, but that's IT!

Thanks for visiting my blog today! I'll be back to visit yours again, too!

I don't have an opinion on Jane, but you do make some interesting points. She's quite odd when you think about it. I've never really thought of her as a strong woman, but she doesn' really bug me that much.

Idol....too bad about Constantine. I can't complain too much , though. I didn't pick up the phone to voe for anybody.

I only liked Jane Fonda in Barbarella. She sounds like an awful person though.

Jane is pretty fucked up. Her dad beat the "thin" ideal into her. Her mom committed suicide. She's got unbelieveably low self-esteem. She seems to blow with the wind.

Although my life has had its low points, and although I don't have two dimes to rub together, I'm glad I'm not Jane Fonda.

But I liked her in 9 to 5.

Oh, and coming back to say "thanks" for linking me. I've linked you, too! Don't know why we didn't do it earlier. ;)

I don't like Jane. Can't say if she can act as I have never seen her in anything, except on a sticker in a urinal.

I think she should shave her armpits and call it a day.

I have to admit I've never really thought much about Jane Fonda, good or bad.. I heard she had plastic surgery (removed a rib or something) to look thinner, which of course is horrible. I consider myself a feminist and that is exactly the kind of things that women do in order to conform to a view of women presented in the media. in my opinion the media is inherently patriarchal, and so by conforming to this patriarchal image of women, and then claiming to be a feminist, she is not doing herself any favours in the believeability department. But as I've got into trouble before for starting this argument, I'll leave it at that... ;-)

thanks for sharing that about Scott..I KNEW he looked like an axe-murderer. For his sake I hope things change for him..bleeding heart in me. As for Jane..the whole thing makes me sick. I grew up in a military family and while my political views lean towards the elephants...what she did, has done, is doing is unforgiveable. We may not agree with the war, but our people are there now and we need to support them. Regardless of the politics...whew...thanks for the mini-rant..thought I was done for the week..guess not! Happy weekend! ...really ;0)

Let me start by saying that the only non-family picture I have in my office is of me with Gloria Steinem. So you all know where I stand.

What I have a problem with is that people like Jane Fonda (with all her crap) define themselves as feminists, further screwing up the meaning of the word. It's bad enough that so many use it as a derogative term to mean anti-man, anti-child, anti-world.

I still go back to what Rebecca West said back in 1913, "People call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that distinguish me from a doormat."

Sorry Jane. That doesn't sound like you.

FTS told me yesterday of a new scandal involving BO...as in he was convicted of drug possession. Your thoughts, madam? ;)
