That's Right, My Kid Is Brilliant

I went to pick up Princess from daycare yesterday after work, and two of the caretakers were in the room. One of them tells me how great Princess is, how happy she is, and that she never cries (yay!). Then she says, she also knows all the other kids' names. So the other caretaker says, "Yes, Miss Princess is amazing! She has learned all of the kids' names! Most of the kids can't even say our names, but Miss Princess knows them all!" So I have to test her. I point to a kid and ask Princess, who is that? She says, "That's Kayla." And another kid, who is that? "That's Brandon." My kid is waaaaay smarter than those other kids. But of course, I already knew that.

I am reading the Janet Evanovich books about Stephanie Plum which sooo many of you recommended. Overall, I like them. I am on book three now. But I have to say, some of it is so not Jersey. Like when she says that in some areas of the country they don't allow shopping on Sundays, but that we would never allow that here. Ha. Bergen County has blue laws that do not allow shopping on Sundays. Of course, I refuse to live in Bergen County because I do need access to shopping 7 days a week. But I was thinking, how well can this author know Jersey if she doesn't know that one whole county doesn't allow Sunday shopping? I know she is originally from here, but....

And she also has characters use the term "on account of" - as in, "I couldn't do it on account of my busy blogging schedule." No one I know uses that phrase - maybe its a Southern Jersey thing? In my part of Jersey we would say "I couldn't do it cuz of my busy blogging schedule." Anyone here from Southern Jersey? Do ya'll say that down South? (Anything beyond the Driscoll Bridge is "down south" to me).

Hope everyone is doing well - I promise that when my life calms down, probably in early 2006 or so, I will get back on the blogging wagon and visit more of you. Nah, I'll try sooner than that. Life's just been a madhouse lately.

You hadn't read the Stephanie Plum series before? Other than the little differences you see, please tell me that you are enjoying them and that they make you laugh!! I'm thinking that some of her "misses" could be a case of hyperbole?

And yay for Princess for being the smart child!

I am so glad to hear princess is doing so well at daycare. What a trooper!

On another note....you watch the Devils game last night? We were switching between that and the Bruins/Montreal game. The first 10 minutes of that game Brodeur was a mad man. Had it not been for him they would have been down early. I hate the Devils but I love watching him.

Ouch; you can imagine my surprise to find that I live in South Jersey. Personally, I draw the line just south of where I live, so I guess I can see where you are coming from. As to your original question, I haven't a clue, since I'm a transplant. If you want to talk about an area with a ton of funky expressions, and accents that will drive you up a wall, my old stomping grounds in central PA would give you a wealth of material.

Glad to hear that things are going well in the family and job departments.

I loved those books. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm in love with Ranger. Or maybe it's just lust.

Awww, Princess is charming them already!

Evanovich lives in New Hampshire, which is a FAR, far cry from New Jersey! Do you know I drove to Paramus to shop at IKEA, only to find it closed on a Sunday? Good thing I was staying over!

Maybe her "on account of" is because Janet is over 45! (we grew up hearing Jerry Mathers saying that on "Leave It To Beaver!")

You sound great! You just report in whenever you feel like it. We'll still be here.

I just love those books. I've read 9 of them already. Good, silly, mindless reading! Even if she doesn't get her Jersey fact exactly straight! lol

YAY for Princess.

I started reading the Janet Evanovich books when I still lived in NJ. The "on account of" is definitely a Trenton/South Jersey thing as many candidates I interviewed would say stuff like that.

As an outsider living in New Jersey for a few years, I definitely got the impression that people in Mercer County (where the novels were set) were completely unaware of the rest of the state that was North of Somerset County. I worked in retail HR and I couldn't believe that the managers didn't know about the blue laws in Paramus when we started to expand in that area.

Yes, Janet Evanovich lives in NH now, but she grew up in NJ from what I remember.

And someone mentioned Ranger? Lust is definitely right. *fanning self* Too bad he's fictitious! ;-)

Just figured I'd let you know.... The Internet is screwed for me and your page is one of the ones I can't see......

Friggin providers need to get their crap figured out so this all gets back to normal.
