There She Goes, Miss America!

I am sure you have all heard by now that the Miss America pageant is leaving my fair state. Its been pretty big news around here. But I don't really care. I don't think that anyone my age or younger (and probably older too) watches Miss America. Its a contest that has seen its best days and left them behind. The women aren't sexy, and men can see much more attractive and scantily-clad chicks in Maxim. And I hope that most women aren't interested because of the ridiculous idea that you have to strut around in a bathing suit and heels to compete for a college scholarship. Um, no.

I don't see how its a loss for Atlantic City either. I don't think you have swarms of people coming to AC to see the pageant. I am sure a few people (like, maybe the contestants' moms?) come for that. But most people come to AC for the gambling. There's nothing else to do down there as far as I am concerned. You can't take 10 steps down the boardwalk without being hassled by a beggar or propositioned by a hooker. The beach? I don't know, does anyone even go on the beach in AC? And God forbid you walk *off* the boardwalk onto the streets of AC...scary. Hold your purse tight. I would venture to say that 90% of the people down there never even leave the casinos. At all.

Now, I understand parts of AC are improving. They have added the upscale Borgata hotel and casino, which is supposed to be lovely. And from what I read in the paper, it sounds like lots of the casinos are adding bars and clubs to cater to a younger crowd (in most of the casinos, if you are under 70, you are probably the youngest person around).

As you know, I am a Jersey Girl through and through. But. It takes me about 3 hours to drive down to Atlantic City. And it takes me about 3.5 to fly to Vegas. Which would you choose?
------------
One final note, a total aside: Jon Bon Jovi once had a band called The Atlantic City Expressway. I know you were dying to know that.

It takes me 3 hours too. I'm just waiting to run into to you at the A&P. I too am a Jersey girl (as you know) and I too hate AC. Too many degenerates.
yuck.

Okay, I have to ask. Are you in Soprano Country?

I know it's a hick question. But well, I'm from IL, so yeah.

I have not been to AC. Vegas used to be pretty seedy, but it's really been upgraded, too. It's quite a site, I think it's like another planet.

Hmmm...tough decision Las Vegas vs. Atlantic City...What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Can you say the same thing about AC?

BTW, love seeing you around the Beach House Resort.

They have added a section of Outlets right near the Convention Center (and I think down the street from Trump Casino) that I'm a bit addicted to! They are very safe to walk around (at least during the day, I've never been there at night). I have never felt anything but super comfortable there and I am SOOOO not a city-type person.

For my birthday a few weeks ago, we went to The Quarter at Tropicana it was really nice. Nothing better than a 3 course DESSERT!!!!! :) The Irish Pub had a little to be desired in the way of food, but the atmosphere was nice. They have a PF Changs, Carmine's, The Sound Of Philadelphia, etc and some "upscale" shopping. I know I sound a bit like an add, but for someone who greatly dislikes anything "unsuburb" I have really enjoyed my last two or three visits to A.C. at these places.

Unfort, I share your sentiment, Jersey in regards to Miss America. I'm a bit sad that it's dying out, as it's history and tradition in New Jersey, but I think the era of a widescale beauty pagent has passed. Thank goodness for smart, beautiful women everywhere! :) (I hope that doesn't sound in any way, but the way I intended. )

Not a big fan of AC OR the Miss America pageant, though I did enjoy it as a teenager.

Miss England & Miss World haven't been shown on terrestrial tv in this country since the mid-1980's.

Nicely put. I've never seen the appeal of AC. It's a classic case of haves and have-nots, and it's sad to see how the city has been left to crumble just off the strip.

Here from Michele's tonight.

There's no place like Vegas. Plain and simple. It's the happiest place on Earth. For me, anyways. :)
